Grape varietals in Champagne

Three varietals are the most commonly grown in Champagne: Pinot noir, Meunier and Chardonnay. Other 4 varietals are allowed, but represent less than 1% of the production (Pinot blanc, Pinot gris, Arbanne and Petit-meslier). Pinot noir covers 38% of the AOC, and is found mostly in the Reims Mountain and Côte des Bars. They generally give relatively strong and powerful wines with notes of red fruit. Meunier covers 32% of the AOC and dominates the Marne Valley, giving round and velvety wines with notes of yellow fruits. Chardonnay is planted in 30% of the AOC, mostly in the Côte des Blancs, producing delicate mineral wines with floral and citrusy notes.

Over the winter time, the soils rest and prepare for the upcoming vintage, the vines are pruned to be released of unwanted sarments. After notifying the authorities, new vines can be planted up to the month of mars. Indeed, every European Union’s PDO has to comply with a maximum wine quota every year. To produce champagne grapes, the vines must be at least 4 years old, they must be evenly spaced to achieve an average of 8000 vines per hectare (3250 per acre) and ensure quality grapes. This density allows for enough sun exposure while forcing their roots to compete for water and nutrients, spreading far down and sideways. At the end all of that makes for good grapes, thus an excellent Champagne!

Very Nice

Impeccable hosting and welcoming ! Interesting visit and tpo of the notch tasting ! We recommand the detour. It was a real present...ideas for celebrations and holidays!

What a happiness !

To do absolutely, at least to know a rather rare job. The visit was nice, but the tasting was totally extraordinaire. Advice, anecdotes, good time with good wine. The Loire Wines are not the most known, and that is a shame ! The Caves Duhard should make you change your mind. Go there if only just for an hour of pure pleasure shared with passionate people !

It changes of the habitual visits. Thanks to them, I learned to taste the wine like a pro. Thank you. Very good products to taste with very pleasant persons.

Nice cave !!!

Really nice cave, really good hospitality, tasting with anecdotes on wines and its heritage!!! Really good visit.

Informed advice and nice choice of flasks

A visit of the caves followed by a wine tasting with informed advice and a little bit of cheese to munch on between each glasses. Explanations of tasting and on the aging of the wines. Nice choice of old bottles, perfect to offer oneself wines of a particular year. Reasonable rates.
