Very few wine merchants have the pride to have a rich collection like ours.
It would be almost impossible to recreate it nowadays.
Why is it such an exceptional collection ?
The first chance the caves Duhard had was the company has been a family business transmitted from generation to generation, always with the full wine stock. Normally, the wine is shared between all the sellers… Today, it would be totally meaningless to scatter the collection. In our caves, we have the responsibility to make wines as good as in the past time to perpetuate the work started two centuries ago.
The Duhard had their own philosophy. Knowing Michel Duhard would have made you aware of it ! Quality first, because Nature is sometimes very generous. It’s up to wine makers to extract the best from the grapes , and to grow the wine as they grow their children. Passion, love, good storage are mandatory to make these wines travelling through the ages.
The Duhard, probably because they were coopers, managed to produce great quality wines. The vinification process has evolved a lot since our first bottle in 1874. Imagine that at that period, the Impressionists were new born, it was the gold rush in California, Paris had not its Eiffel Tower yet, and the Royal Society gave to Louis Pasteur the Copley Medal for his researches on fermentation. In this period, making wine that could age was almost a miracle !
Years are very different from each other. To produce a great vintage, savoir-faire is not enough, even if we work hard every single year. Only Mother-Nature decides. The wine maker just has to respect and protect her. In the Duhard collection, we go back in time until 1874. Some years are missing though… You will have to skip 1893, 1929, 1933… Since 1945, the collection is complete !
This extraordinary grape variety allows the elaboration of dry, semi dry, sweet, dessert, slightly and fully sparkling wines.
No other grapes can be so versatile. Harvested when ripe, it has a high sugar level but also a pleasant acidity. These are two perfect elements to keep the wine for decades. The chenin grape stars to grow in Amboise, where we are located, and goes up to Anjou area.
Our caves are just ideal to age great vintages. Dug in tufa stone, they keep a high level of humidity (around 90%) all year long as well as a low and constant temperature of 12°C (+/- 1°C) whatever the outside climate conditions are.

What a happiness !
To do absolutely, at least to know a rather rare job. The visit was nice, but the tasting was totally extraordinaire. Advice, anecdotes, good time with good wine. The Loire Wines are not the most known, and that is a shame ! The Caves Duhard should make you change your mind. Go there if only just for an hour of pure pleasure shared with passionate people !
It changes of the habitual visits. Thanks to them, I learned to taste the wine like a pro. Thank you. Very good products to taste with very pleasant persons.

Informed advice and nice choice of flasks
A visit of the caves followed by a wine tasting with informed advice and a little bit of cheese to munch on between each glasses. Explanations of tasting and on the aging of the wines. Nice choice of old bottles, perfect to offer oneself wines of a particular year. Reasonable rates.
